Programme Structure

Module 1: RBL810 – Research Methodology (30 ECTS)
Covers qualitative and quantitative research methods, design strategies, ethical considerations, data analysis, and scholarly research writing. The module concludes with the submission and approval of a comprehensive doctoral research proposal. Upon approval, a research supervisor is formally assigned.

Module 2: RBL820 – Scholarly Engagement I (15 ECTS)
Participation in a national or international academic conference. Requires submission of a detailed reflective report and proof of engagement.

Module 3: RBL830 – Scholarly Engagement II (15 ECTS)
Participation in a second scholarly conference or seminar to deepen academic networking and discourse. A reflective report and supporting documentation are required.

Module 4: VIVA920 – Viva Voce (Oral Defense) (30 ECTS)

A formal defense of the thesis before an academic panel. Candidates must present their research process, defend key findings, and respond to critical questions.

Module 5: DSSR980 – Doctoral Thesis (150 ECTS)
Candidates submit a doctoral thesis of at least 60,000 words that:

  • Demonstrates original thinking and a clear contribution to academic knowledge
  • Is theoretically grounded and analytically robust
  • Is suitable for publication or dissemination
  • Undergoes double-blind academic review and final viva defense

Entry Requirements

1. Master’s Degree from an accredited institution, preferably with a thesis or capstone project.
2. Research Experience such as peer-reviewed publications, academic projects, or independent studies.
3. Academic Teaching Experience is an advantage, especially in higher education settings.
4. Professional Experience – minimum 8 years in a relevant field.
5. English Proficiency – medium of instruction certificate, IELTS/TOEFL, or EIU’s in-house English test.
6. References – one academic and one professional.
7. Statement of Purpose (500 words) – clearly articulating research interest, academic motivation, and proposed contribution
